Shipping to Bermuda by Ocean or Air – How to calculate your costs

If you are looking to send goods or personal possessions to Bermuda via sea or air freight an important consideration will often be how much it costs.

Managing the cost of international shipments from the UK to Bermuda requires careful planning, as many factors go into the cost calculations for shipping.

In fact, the various factors that affect the price that you pay for shipments to Bermuda are different depending on whether your freight is travelling by ocean or via air.

To help you understand these factors, and give you an idea of how your shipment costs are calculated we have prepared a helpful video:

If you are looking to minimise the costs of shipments, different steps and approaches can be taken, but you must first understand the basic principles of overseas freight.

Here are some tips to follow beforehand:

  • Choose the Right Mode of Transport: Ocean freight is typically cheaper than air freight, but it’s also slower. If speed isn’t a priority, consider shipping by sea. However, if the product is high-value or perishable, air freight could reduce costs associated with damage or spoilage.
  • Plan Ahead: Both air and ocean freight costs can fluctuate based on demand. By planning your shipments well in advance, you can avoid peak shipping times and secure lower rates. Last-minute bookings tend to be more expensive, so try to avoid these if possible.
  • Package Efficiently: The way your goods are packaged can impact the cost of shipping. Efficient packaging reduces the size and weight of your shipment, which can affect freight costs.

I am moving to Bermuda from the UK, how do I ship my personal items?

I am moving to Bermuda from the UK, how do I ship my personal items?

We’re here to help the hundreds of people who use shipping services to move their personal effects and household goods to and from Bermuda each year via sea and air freight services.

With decades of experience, we fully understand the shipping requirements and essential paperwork needed to deal with shipping lines, airlines and the Customs authorities at home and abroad.

For large household moves, we will initially undertake a survey and provide an estimate of the shipping costs. Subject to your approval we will pick up your goods from your home and arrange everything through to final delivery. For smaller shipments of household goods and for personal effects a pre-shipment survey should not be necessary. All items must be sufficiently packed for shipping to avoid the risk of damage in transit, and we can quote you for any additional packing if required.

By using Bermuda Forwarders (UK), anyone moving to Bermuda will save themselves time and can be assured of an effective service at a competitive price. We manage the whole process door-to-door, and our experienced team of customer service personnel are on hand to explain the process and assist you every step of the way.

All we require, other than your items, is a completed set of forms, which you can find in our Guide to Shipping Household Goods and Personal Effects.

A brighter future – Looking beyond the pandemic

A brighter future – Looking beyond the pandemic

Like many places around the world, Bermuda has been hit hard by the impact of COVID-19 and the associated global economic downturn.

While we are by no means out of the woods, for the first time things are starting to look more positive as the world slowly returns to normal.

The global vaccination programme continues to be rolled out and already many millions of people have been protected.

This was partly the reason that the fantastic Tokyo Olympics could go ahead, which saw Bermuda collect its first ever gold medal.

For an island that is reliant on overseas trade and travel, this opening up of the global economy is good news for Bermuda.

Hopefully, very soon, we should see a return to normal trade, especially the imports from the UK and Europe that are so essential.

Now is an important time for Bermudian businesses and communities to start looking ahead, so that they can take the steps needed to revitalise the island’s economy.

At Bermuda Forwarders (UK), we hope to play a key role in Bermuda’s recovery as we arrange the shipping of vital consignments that support business growth.

While challenges still remain, we will communicate with Bermuda’s businesses about how we can support them in future.

Bermuda’s retailers enjoy a surge in sales – What does this mean for imports?

Bermuda’s retailers enjoy a surge in sales – What does this mean for imports?

Retail businesses across Bermuda have welcomed a rise in sales in March for the ninth consecutive month as the value of goods sold hits $105.7 million – a 9.8 per cent increase on 2020.

The latest official data on retail sales was released this month and showed the recovery of the retail sector in Bermuda a year on from when the nation first entered restrictions in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

During the month, the total volume of sales also increased by 7.7 per cent as Bermuda enjoys year-on-year growth.

Looking further into the latest figures, apparel stores saw one the biggest improvements, with an increase of 72.2 per cent in sales volume.

This surge in sales activity has been linked to retailers being open longer during March compared to store closures that began in the second half of March last year.

However, the largest sales volume increase was experienced by motor vehicle stores, which saw an increase of 117.7 per cent as a larger number of vehicles were made available for sale this year.

Many other sectors saw the volume of sales increase, including:

  • Building material stores (up 26.3 per cent)
  • Other stores, including shops selling furniture, appliances, electronics, pharmaceuticals, marine supplies and tourist-related goods (up 22.4 per cent)
  • Liquor stores (up 13.1 per cent)

The only sector not to enjoy a year-on-year increase was grocers and food stores. This has been put down to the fact that many households purchased larger amounts in March last year due to initial uncertainty over the pandemic.

The increase in demand for goods in Bermuda has inevitably led to a rise in demand for imports as well. Minister of the Cabinet Office at Government of Bermuda, Wayne Furbert said: “Total selected overseas declarations increased 40.6 per cent in March, compared to March 2020.

“The rise in overseas declarations was influenced by more imports of clothing by courier, as well as higher imports of furniture, machinery, appliances and electrical equipment by sea.”

Consumers and retailers looking for efficient ways of bringing goods from the UK into Bermuda to meet this rise in demand should contact our team. Find out more about our shipping process here or contact us at export@bermudaforwarders.co.uk
